Search Changed: Why Your Next Client Asks AI Before Google
Your buyers no longer start with ten blue links. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews, and act on the first answer. In this opening episode, we explain how AI search is changing brand discovery, what Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) means in practice, how AI assistants choose which brands to recommend, and the first three steps to become the answer AI gives.
Key takeaways
What you will learn
- More searches now end with a direct answer from an AI assistant or an AI Overview, so the buying decision often happens inside the answer.
- AI assistants favor brands that are mentioned consistently in sources they trust, described the same way everywhere, and backed by clear, citable content.
- SEO and GEO work together: SEO earns your place in search, GEO makes sure AI understands, trusts and recommends your brand by name.
- Start this week: check what AI says about you, make your brand information consistent everywhere, and earn mentions in the sources AI cites.

Introduction
Welcome to Be the Answer, the podcast about how brands get found, cited and recommended in the new era of search. This show is brought to you by Aurum Digital, the SEO and GEO agency for brands that lead. I'm your host, and in this first episode we're starting with the big picture: search has changed, and your next client is probably asking AI before they ask Google.
From ten blue links to one answer
Let's start with a simple experiment. Open ChatGPT, or Perplexity, or Google's AI Mode, and type something like: what's the best accounting firm for startups in Austin? Or: which project management tool should a small agency use? You won't get ten blue links. You'll get an answer. A short list of names, a few reasons for each, and maybe a recommendation. And here's the thing: most people will act on that answer. They won't scroll. They won't compare twenty websites. They'll take the two or three brands the AI mentioned and move on.
That's the shift. For more than twenty years, search meant a page of results, and the goal was to rank on page one. Today, more and more searches end with a direct answer, either in an AI assistant or right at the top of Google in an AI Overview. The click that used to land on your website might never happen. The decision is made inside the answer.
So the question for every brand is no longer just: do we rank? It's: are we the answer?
How AI decides which brands to recommend
Which brings us to the obvious next question. How does an AI assistant decide which brands to recommend?
There's no single switch you can flip, but there are clear patterns. First, AI systems lean on sources they trust. When a model answers a question about your industry, it draws on what's been written about that industry across the web: respected publications, trade media, review platforms, directories, forums like Reddit, and authoritative websites. If your brand is mentioned consistently in those places, you're far more likely to appear in the answer. If you're invisible there, you're invisible in the answer too.
Second, AI needs to understand who you are. That sounds basic, but many companies describe themselves differently on their website, their LinkedIn page, their directory listings and their press coverage. To a machine, that inconsistency is noise. Brands that show up clearly, with the same name, the same description and the same core facts everywhere, are easier to understand and easier to recommend.
And third, content still matters, but a specific kind of content. Clear, well-structured pages that answer real questions directly. Original data, expert insight, and pages that make it easy for a machine to pull out a confident answer. Thin, generic content written to fill a keyword quota doesn't get cited.
SEO and GEO work together
Now, you might be wondering: is this replacing SEO? Should I stop worrying about Google rankings?
No. And this is important. SEO and what we call GEO, Generative Engine Optimization, work together. A lot of AI answers are built on top of search results, so strong technical SEO, a healthy site and real authority are still the foundation. GEO adds a new layer on top: making sure your brand is understood, trusted and mentioned in the sources AI relies on, and measuring whether you actually show up in AI answers for the questions your buyers ask. Think of SEO as earning your place in the library, and GEO as making sure the librarian recommends you by name.
Three steps to take this week
So what can you do this week? Here are three first steps.
Step one: check what AI says about you today. Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google, and ask the questions your ideal client would ask. Not your brand name. The real buying questions. Write down which brands appear, and whether you're one of them. That's your baseline.
Step two: make your brand consistent everywhere. Review your website, your Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and the directories and review sites in your industry. Same name, same description, same services, same key facts. It's unglamorous work, but it makes you much easier for AI to understand.
Step three: earn mentions in the places AI trusts. Look at the sources the AI cited when you ran your questions. Those publications, lists and platforms are your target. Getting featured there, through expert commentary, original research or genuine reviews from clients, is how you move from invisible to recommended.
Wrapping up
That's it for this first episode. The big idea to take away is simple: search hasn't disappeared, it has changed shape. The brands that win the next decade will be the ones that rank and get recommended.
In the next episodes we'll go deeper into each of these pieces: how AI chooses its sources, how to build authority that lasts, and how to measure your visibility in AI answers.
